Netflix Manga Adaptations: Which Stay Faithful to the Page?

Manga4 min read

One Piece is the Netflix manga adaptation most often praised for staying close to its source, and Alice in Borderland is also described as mostly faithful. Reviewers say the live-action One Piece kept the wacky, whimsical tone of the manga rather than sanding it down, and they credit creator Eiichiro Oda's direct involvement. Fullmetal Alchemist and Yu Yu Hakusho, by contrast, squeeze a lot of story into a small space.

Be warned: nobody has measured this. None of the pages we checked scores fidelity or compares chapters, so every ranking here is critical opinion. If you are new to the medium and want to read the originals, our guide to starting with manga is a useful place to begin.

The short answer: One Piece and Alice in Borderland

One Piece is the title reviewers reach for first. The live-action series won over most viewers, and the praise keeps returning to tone: the silliness and warmth of the manga survive on screen. The show was in development with Oda as executive producer and Shueisha co-producing, a detail the 2022 review also noted.

Alice in Borderland gets a different kind of credit. A 2022 review called it mostly faithful, noting its Japanese director and cast. Fullmetal Alchemist and Yu Yu Hakusho sit at the other end, since both condense their source heavily.

Again, this is opinion rather than measurement. Treat any list, including this one, as a starting point for your own comparison.

Faithfulness and quality are separate questions

A show can keep a manga's spirit and still change most of its plot. Reviewers praise Rurouni Kenshin for capturing the spirit of the source, even though its five films condense the manga. Bet, the Kakegurui adaptation, is described as taking everything great from the manga, and it has been renewed for a second season.

Zom 100 shows the reverse. It is described as taking liberties and not being a faithful adaptation. Parasyte: The Grey is a different case: a spinoff set in the same continuity, in South Korea with different characters, so it is not a direct adaptation at all.

So ask two questions separately. Does it match the source, and is it good television? The answers can differ, as the examples above suggest. The same tension runs through our ranking of comic book adaptations.

Condensed adaptations: Fullmetal Alchemist and Yu Yu Hakusho

The live-action Fullmetal Alchemist films arrived in 2017, followed by The Revenge of Scar and The Final Alchemy in 2022. Reviewers say they substantially condense a source that ran to 27 volumes and more than 100 chapters. The trilogy streams on Netflix through an exclusive distribution deal rather than as a Netflix original.

Yu Yu Hakusho runs to just five episodes, and reviewers say it massively condenses its source. It is also described as the first Japanese production to top Netflix's global non-English rankings.

Whether a condensed version works depends on what you want from it, and the sources here only record reviewers' views on that point. If you love the originals, our list of manga worth reading is a good next step.

Netflix's live-action record and the 2022 warning

A 2022 review argued that Death Note (2017) and Cowboy Bebop (2021) were weak, and that live-action anime was a difficult area for the streamer. It also noted that Cowboy Bebop was cancelled less than a month after release. Because the piece is dated, treat it as a historical marker rather than a current verdict.

That review called Alice in Borderland Netflix's only good manga adaptation. That view is now out of date, and the sources do not say whether Netflix's Death Note or Cowboy Bebop would be judged differently today.

The fate of Alice in Borderland is also uncertain. One recent roundup says it was likely quietly cancelled after season three in 2025, but the wording is only tentative, so treat it as unconfirmed.

What is coming next

The final 12 episodes of Baki-Dou, numbered 14 to 25, are due on 18 June 2026. The Ribbon Hero, a feature film and modern take on Osamu Tezuka's 1953 manga Princess Knight, is due on 8 August 2026. Blue Box Season 2 is set to stream exclusively on Netflix from October 2026, after its 2024 debut, and Ranma 1/2 Season 3 is expected in October 2026, running to around 12 episodes.

Netflix announced at AnimeJapan 2026 that Dandelion, based on the one-shot debut work of Hideaki Sorachi, the creator of Gintama, was set to premiere on 16 April 2026.

For One Piece, Season 3, The Battle of Alabasta, was filming as of May 2026, with a 2027 release set. A WIT Studio anime remake of the East Blue Saga's opening 50 chapters is also confirmed for 2027. A live-action Death Note has been mentioned, but no page we checked confirms a date, so it should not be treated as scheduled.
